The Old Ashmolean RFC Dinner and Dance

This was the first event to be organised by the newly crowned “youth of the club”. Lead by 1st team skipper Neal Grainger and assisted by the ever busy Treasurer Pete Duffy and the occasional helping skills of Clubman of the year Matt Hunter, the event would hopefully show what could be done with organisation and ambition. The venue was “The Royal Chase Hotel” which had been visited previously, but due to its strained booking list and the luxury of “The Apollo suit” had been out of favour for several years.

The Skipper had felt that the efforts of his 1st XV and the exceptional endeavour of the 2's, had meant that nothing but the best possible venue would suffice. This gay abandon with cash had also led to the signing of Jon “Boyband” Bremner to provide audio entertainment. This was to be a welcome move away from the dodgy bandana wearing rude boy spinning discs from their car boot, which had been a feature for some time!

All was set for a great evening, although with the presence of 100 Ashmoleans, hitches can often spring from nowhere and the unexpected should always be expected!

On arrival, the hotel had put on a lovely spread, with club colours evident throughout, and a bar which would please all, in that it was well stocked! Following some good food and good company, the speeches began with a hilarious address from the incoming Chairman Fred Colbourne, it was clear that although we would miss Paul Coombs' looks and Sin bins, Fred would insert some much needed light heartedness to the committee of angry men. Awards were presented by various committee members and various heckling was deflected back onto those who had issued it. All with the exception of Club Captain Ian Dodd, who in schoolboy-like fashion continued to misname the recent campaign and was duly punished by the rapturous crowd.

After all this and the clearing of the room by the ever willing staff, which were still refusing to do extras, the Bremner sounds kicked off. After a short disturbance by an unnamed person being hypnotised by the rhythm of  Jon Tom's dancing feet, and choosing to take refuse between chairs and tables (at great pace), the party really began. Karaoke performances from Colbourne, Hickey, Culley plus others added to the festivities and the club song of choice (Wonderwall) was crucified in typical Ashmole style. Then with most bingers moving onto entice, it was clear that a good night was had by all and that the youngsters may well be trusted again. Up the moles and well done to all involved.
