Pre-Season Tour Friendly Vs Aylestone (Leicester - away)
Result = 0-42
The first game of the new season would see OA's travel back to a tour side they had played before to test their new but depleted team.
Injuries and unavailability's meant that certain players were drafted in from the second team but for Coach Emile it was a chance to see if all the hard training during the summer months had paid off.
During pre-season there had been quite a movement of players from clubs, and Ashmole was no exception. They had lost one of their most outstanding players of last season; centre Stoney to Rosslyn Park and second row Travis who has unfortunately had to move away.
The good news however is that unlike many years in the past the success of last season has brought in a few new faces. Ex-rugby league player James Morgan comes into the centre and South African Matthyes Johannes (Thyes for short) joins a growing South African core.
The game was scrappy and OA's looked very rusty but in spurts they did look as quick and exciting as they had done last year. The result looks convincing but Emile was by no means happy and with two extremely difficult upcoming cup matches they will need to polish up on the basics if they are to make another great cup run. A mention should go to full back Matt Hunter who was kicking in place of the absent Andy Martin, and despite a hard act to follow he kicked a very impressive 6 out of 6 conversions. This is encouraging for OA's, you can never rely on just one person to kick the points for you and it is reassuring for Emile and Skipper Gareth Watson to know that Matt is their as a good back up.
The forwards especially looked to be lacking match fitness whilst the backs looked sharper but generally it was a decent first game and a good start to a much anticipated season.
Scorers = Bollie, Emile, Neil (winger), James, Faz & Hunter
