Herts/Middx 3 North Vs Hatfield (home)
Result = 61-12
After the disappointment of the first league match against Pinner being called off Ashmole were looking to open their league account with a win. The current champions were bitterly frustrated with the recent league restructure which meant there glorious results from last year went all but unrewarded; they would have to do it all over again and Hatfield came to Firs Lane knowing that they gave OA's a bit of a scare during there last encounter. However, over the past two years Firs Lane had become somewhat of a fortress and you would have to be a very good side to win on the Ashmole home patch.
Hatfield looked strengthened thanks to the merger with QE2 RFC but it was OA's who started brightly scoring early, but they were unable to grasp the game and gifted Hatfield two soft tries, and for the second third of the first half they looked under pressure with the Hatfield attack hinged around their full back who was starting to run the show.
OA's seemed taken aback by Hatfield's all out attack approach but after weathering the brief storm they finally seemed to get into second gear and the backs began to open gaps thanks to the steady platform that the forwards were putting together in the scrums and mauls.
Ashmole played some absolutely blistering rugby during this game but at times they made some mind numbingly basic errors something which concerned the coach Emile, he knows that consistency is important if they are to progress in the national cup which is coming up next week.
The one thing that will have impressed Emile however was the brilliant team work that went into making nearly all of their tries, the one exception to that was John Bremners try which resulted due to a moment of great pace and vision from the flanker/second row as he found himself out in the centres. He sprinted in from just inside the opposition half seeing off the Hatfield full back who had looked so dangerous earlier in the match.
Ashmole began the match well and they finished it even better, their overall team display was very impressive as was the performance of centre Dan, who despite being out with an injury for a couple of weeks stood out as easily the best player for OA's on the day.
Next up is Ilford Wanderers in the Powergen Cup after the expulsion of Tring, who were found to be playing unregistered players, it was a disappointment for Ashmole as they were hoping to inflict some revenge for last years Herts cup final defeat.
