Totts
19th March 2005
Vs Old Tottonians (home) Friendly
Result 39-3
Following their recent run of disastrous results it was time for OA's to put their season back on track and get back to winning ways before the all important final league matches against Saracens and Hackney.
Totts arrived looking to overturn a heavy defeat from earlier in the year, and with Ashmole possibly at their lowest for sometime this could be the visitors best opportunity.
OA's were still without a host of 1st team regulars but were pleased to welcome back number 8 Seve, whilst their side was little different to that which lost to Hendon. Defeat today was a prospect Ashmole dare not contemplate.
Ashmole began the game strongly and they secured the opening tries through centre Johan and scrum half Emile, on both occasions the tries showed determination and excellent support.
Totts however did not lie down, they fought back admirably in the first half with about ten minutes to go, pushing hard for the Ashmole line. As Totts strived for a try Ashmole were forced to give away penalties in their attempt to hold the fort, in his stuggle to save a try flanker Tarron gave the referee no choice but to show yellow and the Totts second row followed after aggressive use of the boot, stamping on Tarron well after the whistle had gone. With the ruck pleasantries over it was back to business for OA's as captain and fly half Neil Grainger superbly chipped over the Totts back line and following a rather fortuitous bounce grounded the ball for Ashmole's third try and rounding off the first half.
Tottonians started the second half the better of two sides, hitting back with two early tries, and putting themselves back into contention. With the scores now a little closer Ashmole needed to step up a gear and they truly obliged and following the introduction of some well timed substitutes OA's made the second half their own.
Former captain Gareth Watson came off the bench to score as did one of the seasons surprising 1st team debutants Ryan who added to his first try against Woodford with two brilliant solo efforts late in the second half. Andy Martin added a further try to tally but will be disappointed with his kicking today converting a mere 2 out 6, and player coach Emile also missed the final kick of the game.
Ashmole showed good form just when they needed too, they performed ten times better than the last couple of weeks and it was a well needed confidence boosting win and a score line that even coach Emile can be pleased with.
News on Jacob following his injury in the Hendon game is that he has injured his foot and it will be 50 - 50 if he will be fit for the Saracens game on April 2nd.
