OLD HABERDASHERS (0) OLD ASHMOLEANS (22)
Last weekends match saw Old Asmoleans travel to play against Old Habs. The moles had a point to prove after losing their unbeaten league run against Royston the week before. Old Habs had put up a tough fight on their previous encounter and would prove no pushover this time either
The Moles started strongly and put Habs under immediate pressure. They did however struggle to make the territorial advantage pay dividend as they were thwarted by a pressing defence by the Habs side. First blood did go to Ashmole with about 20 minutes on the clock as the Habs defence was caught off-side; Andy Martin slotting over for 3 points. It was proving a tough game with the Ashmole side struggling to get into any sort of rhythm, but just before half time the first try of the game was scored by a marauding Johan Van Dyk from 10yards out. Martin converted to give the moles a half time lead of 10 points
The second half saw a better standard of rugby being played by Ashmole, even though playing into a stiff wind; possession was still dominated by the Ashmole side. Strong performances from Jacob Spies and Luke Sehmer in the forwards saw Ashmole take a better grip of the game. Even though under more pressure than in the first half the lead was extended by a great solo effort from Jacob Spies who took a short pass from scrum half Newman just outside the 22', went through the initial line of defence and then swatted away the cover defence to finish under the posts. This try was also converted to leave the moles 17 points to the good. With the pressure easing off the Moles they started to find their stride and were soon over again with a precision backs move where Fly Half Grainger and outside centre combined to send Morgan straight through the Habs defence who then outpaced the cover to score in the corner.
The game was now beyond Habs but to their credit they never stopped pushing and had the moles pinned in their own 22 for the last 10minutes. But it was to no avail as they were unable to penetrate the Ashmole defence.
The game was marred for the Moles as Spies was given a second yellow with minutes to go meaning that a ban will follow, but never the less a good response from an Ashmole side that is proving that it has the guts to grind out a win even when not firing on all cylinders
