Royston
The Old Ashmolean RFC (52) - Royston RFC (0)

Well they patched themselves up, phoned all the registered players they knew and made requests for people to play out of position… Eventually they had a side which was able to take the field for this, the next, Herts/midds 2 league game against Royston. The only potential saving grace for the moles was that Royston have not been overly fortunate this year and were still looking to ignite their season.

It should be stated at this point that this game was not the prettiest. The pitch was damp, but not that damp, the weather was gloomy, but not that gloomy and the handling was interesting, very interesting.

Ashmole maintained the majority of possession and territory, with Royston failing to put any real stamp on the game. The forwards were winning good ball up front, with Kier Mcfaddyen once again instrumental at line out time. However a combination of a backrow and winger in the centres deputising for messes Van Dyk and Morgan were having some trouble with their handling. At times it appeared that catching the ball was a complex mathematical equation and some of the Ashmole players were still counting with their fingers.

Ashmole skipper Neal Grainger took it upon himself to sort the issue out. He made several slicing breaks through the stand off channel which resulted in scores. The pick of these was finished with a delightful chip over the full back and after a slightly fortuitous bounce, a sliding finish.  Selleck and Van Graan also chipped in with scores from close range.

In the second half the debacle continued, lots of promise with end result being an issue. It is testament to Ashmole's dominance that they still managed four second half scores from Grainger (2), Aracus and Viljoen. With Martin finding some of his best kicking form the scoreboard was left ticking along.

Ashmole left the field knowing that they can play much better than this, but it would take some team to be down hearted after a 52 - 0 victory. With Chelmsford looming in the cup, Ashmole will be hoping that a, Some of their better players can return, b, that certain injuries from this week heal and c, that Ashmole have played through some of their worst form and can return to the champagne style that has been missing of late.

To finish, it could be suggested that the Ashmole players enjoyed their evening after victory a lot more than they would had Coach Emile Hertz not been on Honeymoon!
