Grammarians RFC(11) v. (37) The Old Ashmolean RFC

Depending on a club's priorities, the cups can be either a welcome distraction or just extra games. With Ashmole targeting both league and Herts trophy, the national cup may fall into the later category. With several injuries resulting from a recent tight schedule, a slightly weakened moles side were hoping to put up a good show against one of their nearest neighbours.

In team news, McFaddyen came into the second row to allow both Miller and Spies to play back row and deputise for Bremner and Van Graan. Payne continued to play out of position at 7, while in the backs Captain Neal Grainger moved to Full back, to allow Jon Barr to make his 1st team debut at 10.

The game started tightly with penalties being exchanged. Both teams were defending well and being aggressive at the breakdown. This led to several injuries including one to prop Mcleish who had to go to hospital to have a finger put back in line. Both sides seemed to lack any sort of fluidity and the ability to break the opposition down was proving to be elusive. At half time the score was 6 - 9. The touch paper remained unlit and the supporters were hopeful of an improvement.

To a certain extent they got it, but they had to wait. It became evident through the second half that Ashmole were wrestling the advantage away from Grammarians. The forwards were still competing well and the backs had begun to discover some of their missing form. Doherty came on o replace Barr and the Ashmole backs reshuffled moving Grainger back to stand off. Doherty had an almost instant impact. Injecting forward momentum into a move, before bouncing a tackle a sprinting in under the posts.. Grammarians came back into it with a score of their own, and the ame remained closely balanced. Three late tries confirmed another win for the moles. These came from Van Graan, Van Dyk and new scrum half Phil, who had snipped well all day and finally got good reward. Martin kicked well all afternoon and kept to scoreboard ticking. A hard fought contest that Ashmole ran away with in the closing stages.

So another convincing win for the moles. Six out of six this season and onwards and upwards they go. Back to league action next week. They face their tuffest test so far. Not so much because of the opposition, but because the game follows the wedding of Player/Coach Emile Hertz.
