News Letter
***********************************************************************
We have spoken over the last couple of years about maintaining the momentum built up during the last 4 seasons. These 4 years have seen our 1st XV achieve promotion in each year and our 2nd XV league and cup champions of their merit table last season.
Both sides now move up into leagues that will be increasingly physical and played at a much faster pace than previously experienced. That said, I am confident that with the continued commitment of our playing strength, all of our sides will be challenging for honours as we move through the season. We have a great advantage that the majority of our players are young and learning quickly. Also, dare I say, that in the main most players are naturally fit (Graham & Simon excepted) [message from Simon: If Fred thinks that Graham and myself are not natural athletes I would like to challenge him to join us in the front row for a couple of games! Mr Chairman where are you?] If we can couple that with the coaching expertise that Emile and Mike bring to the club then I am hopeful that our momentum can be maintained.
We are attracting the attention of a lot of people throughout Herts & Middlesex rugby circles. The club is playing in a higher league than ever before and we now rank as one of the strongest clubs in North London. This enhanced profile is attracting new players and I hope that all new arrivals will be made to feel welcome.
As I'm sure everyone is aware we have a new 1st XV skipper in the form of Carl Buckland. I am confident Carl will receive full backing from all our players and will certainly lead from the front, little finger permitting. There is a massive challenge ahead for the 1's, being in the London Leagues for the first time in the club's history. We will be pitched in with local rivals Barnet and Finchley and they will be doing their utmost to try and help us back down to where they perceive we belong. So let's ensure we prove them wrong.
The 2's are again to be led into battle by Matt Dudley, ably assisted once more by the organisational skills of Phil Burr. Again they are faced with a much stronger fixture list than ever before, having risen two merit tables. However I do believe that our younger players are learning quickly and that we will be competing in every match.
Also I'm sure everyone is aware John Stewart has taken up the challenge of pulling together a regular 3rd XV. I hope everyone will help support him and maybe some of the older lads may dust their boots off and have a run out.
We are trying to improve the quality and space available for training and have made approaches to hire some better outdoor facilities. Sadly we cannot find a resource to fit our preferred time slot of Thursday evening. If anybody is aware of any facility that may be available please advise either Emile or me.
I continue to feel that our club remains unique in the way we socialise and utilise our clubhouse to its maximum. I hope that players and supporters will continue to attend our social events and that the overall club spirit is maintained. Obviously the club is bound to adhere to the new no smoking laws being introduced from 1st July and I hope that I can rely on all members to adhere to these new rules. By way of compensation we are introducing a new brewer to the club, and so it's goodbye to IPA and hello to London Pride.
I am pleased to announce that Sevy has come up trumps with a sponsorship proposal from his company, Airtech. It was originally offered in a haze of lager and cider at the Dinner and Dance but he has since soberly confirmed the agreement. Therefore we will be putting together a kit deal tied in with the early payment of subscriptions as last year.
Thanks also to David Caplin (aka Mustard) and Andy Lebe from Martin Brokers for their continued support of the club; and to Glenn Shaw for donating his rowing machine.
Finally I must finish by thanking Bolly for his time with the club and wish him well back in South Africa and also, sadly, to hear that JC is being forced to retire through injury. Torn vocal cords I'm told!
So best wishes to all for the upcoming season and I look forward to seeing you at pre-season training
Fred

Many thanks to those of you who attended the Players' Meeting and those who phoned to say they couldn't attend due to work/holidays. It was a great turn out.
It was great to see 28 players at the first training session. Things are looking good with such a positive approach.
Mike and Phil will be assisting me again with training and selection, many thanks to them. We're also trying to organise a conditioning coach for the season. If we're successful in getting one, he will be working to keep injuries to a minimum.
I value all players' input and look forward to many after training/Saturday night discussions - not! Seriously, I`m keen to hear what you have to say.
As a committee, we are working hard to make an enjoyable and yet again successful season. This will not be possible without you playing your part, getting fit, coming to training and putting into effect new skills learnt.
Look forward to seeing you all up there.
Emile

I'm starting to put together a tour for next May Bank Holiday (Thursday 22 - Monday 26 May 2008) but need your feedback to decide what to book. I've put together 2 options:
Option One - 2 nights in England
Option Two - 5(?) nights in Benidorm
With option one a deposit of £50 will be required by the end October, with the remainder paid by the end of March, say £120. With option two a deposit of £200 will be required by the end October, with the remainder paid by the end of March, say £400. It's possible to set up a monthly payment to make it easier for you. But please respond to me so that I can start organising the tour or it'll end up like last year - NO TOUR!!!!! Geoff
